Cam Concept Hooklift Trailer Review: Is a $27K Dumpster Trailer Worth It?

I just picked up a Cam Concept 16K GVWR hooklift dumpster trailer, and I am going to tell you exactly what I think about it. This is a 14-foot deck hooklift trailer that can haul both 14-foot and 16-foot dumpster cans. It came loaded with a gas-powered hydraulic engine, electric tarp, aluminum wheels, toolboxes, and a hydraulic jack. Total price: right around $27,000. Here is the full walkthrough and my honest take after putting it to work at American AF Dumpsters.

What Is a Hooklift Trailer?

For anyone new to the dumpster business, a hooklift trailer is a trailer with a hydraulic hook arm that lifts dumpster cans on and off the trailer deck. Instead of using a cable winch like traditional roll-off systems, the hooklift grabs the can from a hook point and pulls it up onto the trailer. The advantage is speed and simplicity β€” you can load and unload a dumpster in minutes without leaving the cab of your truck.

Hooklift trailers sit in a sweet spot between dump trailers and full-size roll-off trucks. They give you the capability to swap cans on job sites without the $80,000-plus price tag of a dedicated roll-off truck. For operators looking to scale from dump trailers to a more efficient system, hooklifts are worth a serious look. For a broader comparison, check out my post on dump trailers vs roll-off dumpsters.

Cam Concept 16K Specs and Features

The Cam Concept trailer I bought is a 16,000-pound GVWR unit with a 14-foot deck and a 54-inch hook height. That means it handles both 14-foot and 16-foot cans, which covers everything from 15-yard to 25-yard dumpsters. The frame is seriously heavy duty β€” we are talking 8-inch to 12-inch steel rails. This thing is built to take a beating.

Key features include a gas-powered Lifan engine that runs the hydraulic system independently, so it does not drain your truck battery or alternator. It has an electric tarp system, 14-ply tires, diamond plate fenders, D-ring tie-downs throughout, and dual toolboxes. I also added the hydraulic jack and spare tire as options. The pintle hitch gives me flexibility to eventually run it behind the Mack if I decide to go that route.

How the Hooklift System Operates

Operating this trailer is straightforward. You start the gas engine, engage the hydraulic lever, and the hook arm extends forward over the cab of the trailer. It grabs the dumpster can by the hook rail, then pulls it back and tilts it up onto the deck. The whole process takes about two to three minutes once you get the hang of it.

Dumping works the same way in reverse. The hydraulic system tilts the can up and slides it off the back of the trailer. You can also use it as a traditional dump β€” raise the can on the deck and let debris slide out the rear. The remote control option lets you operate everything from outside the truck, which is a huge safety advantage when you are on a tight job site.

Pricing Breakdown

The base Cam Concept hooklift trailer β€” bare bones with the hooklift system, engine, and hydraulics β€” runs about $22,000. Adding the options I got (aluminum wheels, toolboxes, spare tire, hydraulic jack, electric tarp) brought the total to approximately $27,000. That is a significant investment, but compare it to a hooklift truck setup which can easily run $60,000 to $100,000.

For the money, you get a trailer that can swap cans, haul multiple dumpster sizes, and operate behind any heavy-duty pickup truck. If you are doing 10 or more rentals a month, this trailer pays for itself faster than you would think. For a breakdown of how to make those numbers work, read my post on how to price a dumpster rental.

Who Should Buy a Hooklift Trailer

This trailer is not for someone just starting out with zero experience. If you are brand new to the dumpster business, start with a dump trailer and learn the fundamentals first. A hooklift makes sense when you are scaling β€” when you need to drop cans on job sites and keep moving, when you are running multiple dumpsters at once, and when your volume justifies the investment.

If you are currently running dump trailers and hitting a ceiling on how many jobs you can do in a day, a hooklift trailer is the logical next step. It lets you operate more like a roll-off truck without the roll-off truck price tag. My Verdict After Using It

The Cam Concept hooklift trailer is a solid piece of equipment. The build quality is heavy, the hydraulic system is powerful, and the gas engine eliminates the electrical headaches that come with PTO-driven or battery-powered systems. The electric tarp alone saves me five minutes per job, and the hooklift action is smooth once you dial in your technique.

Is it worth $27,000? If you are at the right stage of your business, absolutely. This trailer changed how I operate at American AF Dumpsters. I can drop a can, drive to the next job, and be back to pick it up when the customer is done β€” all without a dedicated roll-off truck. That flexibility is worth every penny.
